Alan always looked forward to his annual vacations with his wife and four sons. For many years the family spent their holidays in Margate, a small town on the South Natal coast of South Africa. In his later years, he and Lyn would also visited Umhlanga on the North Coast of South Africa.

Alan loved taking long walks along the beach watching the boats sail by. He took thousands of photographs of boats which he has depicted in his selection of boat paintings.
