Alan lived in both apartheid and post apartheid South Africa. The atrocities of the system created deep rooted pain and trauma for so many people.

Alan spent hours portraying the effects of Apartheid in his artworks. Alan would approach people with characteristics he wished to depict in his art requesting their permission to photograph them.
